Every day of the week, my morning routine is much the same; I get up, get ready (including a healthy dose of caffeine), head to the office and set up my computer before launching into the day ahead. This morning, there was nothing out of the ordinary; except, when I sat down at my computer screen today, I was greeted by something that simply made my day.
Last night, one of our Street Crew Team Leaders had been in the office doing their reports from a night of running our street outreach program, and they had left something rather special for me. As I took my seat and looked at my monitor, there was a yellow sticky note written by that very same person that said, “Can you believe we get to do this?!”
Eight simple words, that have so much meaning. A short sentence that said so much.
Every day of the year, I have the privilege of being able to work with some of the most amazing people. These are people who are extraordinarily experienced and qualified, but more than that, people who put their heart and soul into everything they do. No matter if they are paid or not, all of the people I work with give generously of their time and bring so much more to their roles than they are expected to.
Every one of these amazing people dig deep to give their very best to help make a difference for others in what are often difficult circumstances, and working with people dealing with serious issues. Despite the tough hours, the hard work and the difficult circumstances, there is no grumbling, complaining or whinging… just this simple yet powerful sentence.
Seeing this sticky note today was an incredible encouragement to me, and a huge challenge, to make sure that I always bring my best and remember what this thing we do is all about. It reminded me that what we do in our services, programs and appeals is a great honour, and that helping others in life is never a chore but an incredible privilege.
Here’s to our amazing staff and volunteers that make a difference in people’s lives every day!
